By Seow Kai Lun
June 14, 2017

Travelling with a young child and looking to hire an Uber Car? Now you can with the introduction of Uber Car Seat, which will be launched in Singapore on 15 June (Thursday).

The option will be available via the Uber booking app – select the Car Seat option when you book an UberX ride – and it costs an extra S$5. All Uber Car Seat cars are equipped with an IMMI Go child car harness that it suitable for children aged 12 months and up – this is the same seat that Uber Car Seat in the US uses.

All Uber Car Seat drivers have high ratings on the app and have gone through a half-day training and test by a child passenger safety technician before they are allowed on the road. The initial phase will see 100 Uber Car Seat drivers, with plans to add more drivers in the upcoming months.

Mummyfique got to take the new Uber Car Seat service out for a spin and here’s what we thought.

Our driver, Antaeus was courteous and knowledgeable about the car seat, answering our questions that we had with ease. We were initially worried about how long it would take to set it up, especially since our pick up point was from an underground carpark. It turns out that our worries were unfounded as in less than a minute, he had set up the car and secured it tightly, even giving it a shake to check that it was in place.

He then proceeded to help our child tester, three-year-old Zoelle Low, onto the seat and buckle her in safely. We were impressed with the adjustments that could be done to ensure that she fit in snugly.

The IMMI Go Car Harness has an adjustable height so that the head of the child is supported properly. The straps holding the legs can also be adjusted to the child’s size.

Zoelle looked comfortable when she was strapped in, and never once did complain about any discomfort during the 20 minute long car ride. In fact, she was so comfortable that she fell asleep, resting her head on the plush headrest.

Her mother, Cindy Tiong says: “ This is a great service for families with young kids like mine who are worried for the safety of their children when we take private hire cars. I’m surprised too at how sturdy it is despite how small it was when I first saw the driver take it out of his car, and my daughter falling asleep in must mean that it is really comfortable for her.”
