What Mums Want: A Christmas Gift Guide

By Melissa Lwee-Ramsay
December 22, 2016

It isn’t always easy buying a gift for someone, even if that someone is one of your nearest and dearest. And if you’re a dad who is trying to get your wife, and mother of your child something special, looking for the perfect Christmas present can be a stressful process.

Which is why here at Mummyfique, we surveyed a group of mums and asked them what they really want this Christmas. Here are the top requests from the mums and where you can find them.

Staycation / Vacation

What Mums Want: A Christmas Gift Guide 7
Sofitel Resort & Spa, Sentosa.

At the top of our ‘what mums want’ list is a staycation or a vacation. Which is unsurprising considering that there is nothing more precious to a tired, busy mum than some rest and relax time.

For staycations, we suggest visiting a hotel in Singapore that has a kids club so that mummy (and daddy) can truly have some me time. Sofitel Sentosa Resort and Spa for example, has a special kids club called Villa des Enfants that offers interactive activities such as storytelling, art & craft and cooking classes for little ones.

Otherwise, a trip abroad never goes amiss. You can find some great hotel and resort options from the tried and tested properties in our Mummyfique Hit List section or if in doubt, a bespoke tour operator such as Lightfoot Travel can help you to craft a dream holiday to gift. For a truly unique present, gift mummy a membership (S$8,888) to the newly launched Afini Club — a travel club that offers its members access to a range of luxury villas (and lifestyle consultants) in Asia, often at great prices.

Spa

Auriga Spa.

Our mummy readers must be a tired, busy bunch for next on the request list is a trip to the spa for a massage. We love the Damai Spa at the Grand Hyatt that recently introduced a range of top-notch treatments created by luxury spa brand ESPA. You can read more about why it’s a top pick for us here.

For a truly indulgent experience, the Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore has just launched a new spa in partnership with luxury beauty brand La Mer. The first luxury hotel in Asia Pacific to do so, the highlight is the Timeless Indulgence (S$680, 90mins), a treatment performed by two therapists that combines the La Mer Miracle Broth facial with a pampering foot care regime. If mama happens to be pregnant, she would really appreciate a visit to Capella’s Auriga Spa that offers a babymoon treatment package (S$350++, 2h30mins) that includes a prenatal massage, organic rose facial, hair and scalp treatment and afternoon tea.

Electronic Gadgets

Olympus PEN E-PL8.

Electronic gadgets were also a popular choice with our mummies, presumably because they help make mummy’s life easier.

Capture those special moments with a new camera such as the newly launched Olympus PEN E-PL8 (S$898 for single lens kit, S$1,098 for double zoom lens kit, available at all authorised Olympus retailers) that combines high-performance with style. It features smartphone and social-sharing integration,a  unique selfie-oriented technology, a high-resolution touch-sensitive LCD screen and an innovative 180-degree flip-down LCD screen — perfect for the socially active, and trendy mum.

For the digitally-savvy mum, you can also send gifts of data (because there’s no such thing too much data) through Singtel’s Online Christmas Gifts Shop. You can purchase gifts such as a three- or six-month subscription of 1GB/month data (starting from S$23.70), and send them to family and friends.

Beauty Products

Shu Uemura’s Cosmic Blossom Eye & Cheek Palette.

Every mum loves to take care of her skin so it’s unsurprising that beauty products made it onto the wishlist.  There are some lovely Christmas sets on the market to choose from. GlamGlow’s Gift Sexy Coremud Set (S$120, from Escentials) for example comes with four mud treats to treat every skin concern, whereas Kiehl’s x Jeremyville Richly Hydrating Hand Creams set (S$39) comes with a trio of the brand’s cult classic Ultimate Strength Hand Salve in a package featuring the designer’s funky artwork.

Otherwise, a great makeup palette is always a popular choice. Try Shu Uemura’s Cosmic Blossom Eye & Cheek Palette (S$98, available at Tangs) or their Blossom-Nova Eye Trio ((S$55), both of which have pretty covers designed by artist Takashi Murakami.

Room Scents

What Mums Want: A Christmas Gift Guide 5
There’s nothing quite like some good ol’ aromatherapy when down time is needed so some room scents will make great presents for a mum. We love local artisanal fragrance label Six Fragrances and their premium grade home scents with exotic names the likes of 123 Tribeca and 1724 Pukka. Choose from Fragrance Oils that can be used in air purifiers (S$60) or Scent Solutions (S$60) for reed diffusers. Available here.

Bags

Every woman loves a good bag and mums are no exception. This Christmas, why not splurge and gift mummy dearest a new bag that she’d love. Choose either a glamorous bag such as the Miu Miu Matelassé leather shoulder bag that will take her easily from day to night or a chic practical one such as a black Bucket bag from Mansur Gavriel (S$870, from Laprendo).
