Letter To Mummy: A Mother’s Day Special Series

Letter To Mummy Third In The Series For Mother's Day

“To describe my mother would be to write about a hurricane in its perfect power.” – Maya Angelou

Mothers are an exceptional breed that can take many shapes, forms and sizes. They do not have to be a biological mum to make a difference; as long as they have played a part in their children’s lives, they deserve to be honoured every day. Mummyfique salutes all mums this weekend with Letter to Mummy, an exclusive series where three special families pen heartfelt surprise notes to honour the woman of the house, Mum.

Letter To Mummy by Theo, Clover And Adam Groves: Mum, We Honour You

“A mother is she who can take the place of all others but whose place no one else can take.” — Cardinal Mermillod

Mummyfique is all about mums with a platform created by mums. Mums come in all kinds of variations and this Mother’s Day, as we introduce our last feature in this series of Letter To Mummy, we want to honour all mums from different family units, from single to nuclear to blended to interracial

To conclude the series of Letter To Mummy, we present Yilian, fashion editor turned floral designer and stepmum to two lovely children, Theo and Clover. Being from two distinct cultures, Yilian admits that her relationship with her husband, Adam “hasn’t been a smooth ride” but they have “made it work”. Adam was going through an intensely acrimonious divorce as he was studying for his second PhD. He was simultaneously juggling a full-time job plus also being a sole caregiver to his kids.

Yilian became part of the family when Clover was one and Theo was four at that time. She says, “Nothing will trump the place that biological parents have in their children’s hearts, and you must be okay with that. It’s the hardest part I have to deal with.”

Here are Theo, Clover and Adam’s letters to Yilian.

Hi Aunty Yilian!

I would like to wish you a very happy Mother’s Day. I am so thankful for everything you have done not only for me but this whole family. Thank you for all the clothes and things I wanted you to have got for me. I wish you a wonderful Mother’s Day!!!

Dear Yi Lian

Like most special days we still have to clean-up the house, work, tussle with ourselves, dream, and live. There’s a lot of trite sayings and ways associated with Mother’s Day. But we truly mean to honour you and the steps you’ve helped us all take together.

We love you and want you to know this is a special day because you make it so.

Love
Adam
