Wild Thing: Celebrities Who Named Their Kids After Animals

By Melissa Lwee-Ramsay

Victoria Secret’s Angel Candice Swanepoel still has a few weeks to go before the birth of her first child with fiancé Hermann Nicoli but the model has apparently already chosen a name for the little boy. The mum-to-be shared a photo of her safari-themed baby shower on Instagram (as a tribute to her South African heritage) as did her event planner Mariana Paraiso whose posted pictures featuring the name ‘Anacã’ hung on the wall, suggesting that she has chosen the Brazilian word for ‘bird’ for her unborn son.

Swanepoel is not the only one who love the great outdoors so much that they’ve bestowed animal-inspired names on their children. Here are five more celebrities who have taken a walk on the wild side when naming their progeny.

  1. Zooney Dechanel and Elsie Otter Pechnik

The New Girl star has always been known for being a little bit kooky so it is unsurprising that she would give her daughter an unusual name — Elsie Otter Pechenik. In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres on her show, she reveals that both she and husband, producer Jacob Pechenik chose Otter as the middle name for their daughter because “Otters are cute, and playful and smart”.

  1. Jamie Oliver and Buddy Bear Oliver

Together with his wife Jools, Jamie Oliver is dad to five-year old Buddy Bear Oliver. The duo are known for choosing whimsical, nature-inspired names for the kids and are also parents to Poppy Honey, Daisy Boo and Petal Blossom Rainbow. The pair have recently welcomed a fifth child to the family — a baby boy — whose name has yet to be revealed. It is said that Jools is the one who chooses the names and we can’t wait to see what she has up her sleeve for her latest cub.

  1. Alicia Silverstone and Bear Blu Jarecki

Bear seems to be a popular name with celebrities. Actress Alicia Silverstone for instance, chose the name Bear for her five-year old son with husband Christopher Jarecki. On why the name: ‘We thought that it would be really cute for a baby and very sexy for a man,” she said. Bear is also the name of Kate Winslet’s two-year old boy with her husband Ned Rocknroll.

  1. Nicole Richie and Sparrow Madden

For their second child, Nicole Richie and husband Joel Madden named their little boy Sparrow. The pair look to be fans of more unique names. Sparrow’s elder sister is called Harlow inspiring Richie to name her fashion label House of Harlow.

5. Alessandra Ambrosio and Noah Phoenix Ambrosio Mazur

Ok, so the bird is a mythical creature but we still love Ambrosio’s choice of Phoenix as the middle name of her son with businessman fiancé Jamie Mazur. After all, it’s pretty cool to be named after a bird that rises from the ashes.

  1. Erykah Badu and Puma Sabti Curry

When mama in the kitchen fixen Puma and Mars' hair… I'll call you back.

Soul singer Erykah Badu has always been known for her unique sense of style so it’s pretty fitting that her daughter’s name would be out of the box.  Puma may not be a common choice, particularly for a girl but we think it is perfect for the scion of a singer who is filled with personality.

  1. Bryan Adams and Mirabelle Bunny Adams

Singer Bryan Adams and his partner Alicia Grimaldi named their first daughter the middle name Bunny. The little girl was born on Good Friday (just before Easter Sunday) which inspired the fluffy moniker.

Bunny is similarly the name of British glamour model Katie Price’s daughter with her husband Keiran Hayler.
