Beauty Files: CNY Makeup Looks To Usher In The Year Of The Dog

By Damelza Harris-Olsen

Fondly referred to as man’s best friend, the dog symbolises justice, openness, tolerance and innovation. We’re hoping this year of the dog will bring some calm to the volatility of 2017 – and we’re starting with CNY Makeup Looks.

2017 was a year of many strange beauty trends what with the wriggly eyebrows and glitter tongues (be gone!).

We’re bringing it back to classy, sophisticated beauty this Lunar New Year – dap on a little gold for wealth and red for luck. Sparkle this Chinese New Year with inspiration from these tutorials and when you’re looking all fancy, tag us on Instagram @mummyfique.

Get Your Wealth On With Gold

Beauty Tip: Metallics are in and trending all over the place. Do not be afraid to use gold. It is such a versatile metallic and suits ANY skin tone. Get a gold that suits you – varieties include, rose gold (pinkish), antique gold (yellow-brown), gold, burnt gold (black-gold), light gold (light yellow). Choose a satin version for a soft, muted look or full-on glitter to go all out. Either option works great for this look.

Keep the rest of your makeup in similar hues for an almost monotone look to keep it trendy.

Go Natural For Health

Beauty Tip: These colours may not work on all skin tones but the techniques will. Find your version of nude, this can be a very light beige for the fairest skin to a dark taupe or even a dark brown for someone with much deeper skin.

Tones can also range from cool to neutrals to warm. Do not be afraid to mix cool and warm colours. An age-old rule of thumb was to choose cool or warm based on your skin tone but this doesn’t always work and too many warm tones CAN make you look dull. Experiment, mix and match and don’t be afraid to use this technique to design your own special look.

Tease With Red For Luck

Beauty Tip: Not all reds are made equal, find a red that suits your skin tone. This can range from an orangey red right up to a true blue red. Play around with textures too, if a full-on matte red pout scares the beejeezus out of you, opt for a translucent satin or gloss version instead.

If you want your makeup to look good, skin prep is KEY!

Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise. Makeup does not sit well on dry skin and slides off oily skin. Cleanse, moisturise and prime before makeup – this ensures your foundation glides on like butter and looks as flawless as possible without piling it on.

And don’t forget to set with a setting spray when you’re done, think of your setting spray as hairspray for the face – it holds all your work in place a lot longer than without. And after all that time, wouldn’t you want to maintain your masterpiece?
