Baby’s on the horizon and you’re all set for their arrival! Baby cot – check! Nursery bedding – check! Milk bottle steriliser – check! Diapers – check! But wait – what about your hospital stay when baby arrives? Preparing for the arrival of your baby is no doubt an exciting but sometimes overwhelming experience, especially for first-time mums. Packing your hospital bag is a crucial task that needs to be done even way before the arrival of your little one. You must always consider what the hospital can provide (with or without additional cost) when crafting a list of things to pack. It’s essential to include items to ensure both safety and comfort given the current post-COVID context.

Mummyfique’s comprehensive checklist will guide you through the must-haves in your hospital bag, from traditional essentials to modern necessities, ensuring you’re all set for your hospital stay in Singapore.

Mummy Essentials

Key Documents

Bringing along important documents is crucial for a smooth hospital admission. Make sure you have your NRIC, your spouse’s identification, and any necessary admission forms. As well, have your insurance information on hand so it can expedite processing and ensure that everything goes smoothly. Our tip? Tuck these documents in a designated folder or pouch for easy access and to avoid any last-minute scrambling. You definitely wouldn’t want to deal with administrative matters when contractions are coming along fast and furious!

Cool, Breathable Clothing

Pack your most comfortable and cool clothing like two-piece button-down pyjama sets or pamper yourself with silk pyjamas! After all, you will be going through a huge feat of bringing a little one into this works! Maternity gowns that allow easy access for breastfeeding are perfect as well. If you’re the kind that get cold hands and feet easily, pack some cosy home socks or slippers to keep your feet warm. Having these familiar items makes a world of difference in how relaxed and comfortable you feel during your stay. The more relaxed you are, the more you’ll be at ease navigating the first few days of tending to your baby.

Toiletries

Personal hygiene is definitely important especially when you have your little bub in tow. We love travel-sized versions of essential toiletries like shampoo, conditioner and body wash sets as well as toothbrush and toothpaste packed neatly in a pouch. You may consider dry shampoos too to avoid unnecessary spillage. Don’t forget a hairbrush, hair ties, and clips if necessary. Lip balm is a must because you’ll be spending days and nights in an aircon room so chances of your lips getting too dry is a given.

Nursing Essentials

If you plan to breastfeed, having the right nursing essentials can smoothen out the process. Especially if you’re a first time mum, having these go-to items will make a world of difference as you begin your breastfeeding journey.

While hospitals do provide rental of breast pumps, in this day and age when COVID is still looming, it may be safer to purchase one prior to your delivery. There are many options to choose from so research before buying a suitable set. Frankly, if you’re a first-time mama, you wouldn’t really know which pumps are comfortable for you. Everyone is different so what is comfortable for some, may not be for others. Our take? Don’t invest in a super high-end breast pump first. Opt for a simple, fuss-free mid-range set and once you get the hang of breastfeeding and pumping milk as well as having a gauge as to how long you’ll be breastfeeding baby for, then consider ‘upgrading’.

Nursing bras are important so ensure you’ve checked out the brands out there and choose those that are made of breathable fabric. Breast pads are also essential to manage any leaks and keep you feeling dry. Nipple cream, like Purelan, is a life saviour especially during the initial stages of breastfeeding and can prevent and soothe any discomfort. Don’t worry, it’s safe for baby.

Baby Essentials

Clothing

One of the most delightful parts of preparing your hospital bag is packing clothing for your baby! Bring a few newborn-sized onesies, mittens, and booties to keep your baby warm and comfortable. We love Oeteo’s Easyeo Rompers! These rompers have no buttons, snaps or zips and they are super easy to put on and take off! Watch how to do so here! A special going-home outfit can make the first trip home even more memorable. Make sure to choose soft, breathable fabrics that are gentle on your baby’s delicate skin. Bamboo fabrics are cooling and best for our weather too!

Diapers and Wipes

A key essential in your hospital bag and for the next few years (or more!) in your diaper bag and even hand bag? Baby wipes! Although hospitals do provide them, it’s good to have your preferred ones on hand. The hospital will also provide diapers (chargeable) so it’s best that you also pack a small pack of newborn-sized diapers.

Baby Blanket

A soft baby blanket is a must-have for swaddling and providing comfort to your newborn. Choose a blanket made from gentle, breathable fabric to keep your baby cosy. This blanket can be used for swaddling, as a nursing cover, or simply to keep your baby warm. Little Rei‘s range of swaddle blankets not only are made of comfy bamboo fabric but also come in soothing colours and chic designs.

Another option (which we love!) is SWADDLE UP™! This revolutionary one-piece swaddle brand from Australia boasts a unique, patented, award winning ARMS UP™ design of the SWADDLE UP™ which is designed to allow a familiar feeling to your baby of being in the womb. SWADDLE UP™ allows a natural ARMS UP™ position as well as movement of your baby’s hands to the mouth for true SELF-SOOTHING™. SELF-SOOTHING™ equates more sleep for your baby (and you!). And yes, you need your sleep!

Mummy’s Comfort and Entertainment

Pillows and Blankets

Hospitals can sometimes feel sterile and impersonal, so bringing a few personal items can make a big difference. A comfortable pillow from home can provide better support and help you rest more easily. A soft blanket can keep you warm and cosy, especially in a chilly hospital room. These items can make your hospital stay feel a bit more like home, providing comfort and a sense of familiarity.

SOVA’s mulberry silk Rest & Relax Set is a luxurious option for ultimate comfort post-partum. It consists of pillowcases, an eye mask, a headband, and scrunchie – all of what you need for a good night’s rest everyday. With having to feed your newborn every two or three hours, you’d definitely want to take in as much zzzs as you can!

If you’re breastfeeding, investing in a My Breast Friend nursing pillow might be a good idea. It has a wraparound design, firm cushion and adjustable design to the backrest. This encourages proper latch-on for baby and also provides you with good back support.

Entertainment

Staying entertained during your hospital stay can help pass the time and keep your spirits up. Pack a few books or magazines that you enjoy reading. A tablet or smartphone loaded with your favourite movies, music, and apps can provide hours of distraction and are also useful when you’re breastfeeding! Don’t forget chargers for all your devices to ensure you stay connected.

Snacks and Drinks

Hospital food might not always be to your liking, so packing some of your favourite snacks can be a lifesaver. Healthy snacks like granola bars, nuts, and dried fruit can provide quick energy boosts. A reusable water bottle is also useful for you to constantly stay hydrated.

Another good snack to have is lactation cookies! The ingredients used in lactation cookies vary, but some of the most common include fenugreek, brewers yeast, flaxseed, and oats. Having a steady milk supply is always a concern for mums, especially first-time mums. These cookies are not only delicious but also nutritious and a good support for your breastfeeding journey.

Post-COVID Safety Items

Hand Sanitizers

In the post-COVID era, maintaining hand hygiene is more important than ever. Pack a few travel-sized bottles of hand sanitiser with at least 60% alcohol content. Twinkle Baby’s Travel Set Kit comes in handy as it’s packed with a hand sanitiser, anti-dust mite spray as well as a baby balm! These can be handy for quick sanitization, especially when soap and water aren’t readily available. Place them in easy-to-reach spots in your hospital bag so you can access them whenever needed. This small step can significantly reduce the risk of infections and provide peace of mind.

Air Purifiers

Ensuring clean air in your hospital room can contribute to a safer and more comfortable environment. While the hospital has air purifiers all round, having one in your delivery suite may be more effective in keeping pollutants away. A portable air purifier with HEPA filters can help remove airborne particles and allergens, providing fresher air for you and your baby. Our top pick is Sterra Nova™, which is a sleek, portable hospital-grade mini air purifier for dust-free, fresh and clean air! These compact units are easy to carry and can be placed next to your bed for maximum benefit. Investing in an air purifier can help create a healthier space for your baby’s first moments.

Face Masks

Face masks have become an essential part of our daily lives, especially in healthcare settings. Bring a pack of disposable medical-grade masks for your hospital stay. These masks can provide effective protection against airborne pathogens. Additionally, consider packing a few reusable masks for added comfort and convenience. Wearing a mask can help protect you, your baby, and the hospital staff, ensuring a safer environment for everyone.
