Kids’ Style: Ruffles

By Samantha Jong

Whether you like them or not, ruffles are big this season and were all over the runway, on necklines, jackets and hemlines. This trend has played into children’s fashion too and we love how these flouncy frills look on the little ones. Ruffles add a playful edge to their outfits and, let’s be honest, kids love twirling and seeing them bounce around them. Here are a couple of ideas on how you can let your minis wear ruffles out.

If you’re new to ruffles, an easy way to wear them is to don a solid coloured dress that has ruffles at the hem, like what Selma has on. Complete the outfit with a pair of simple sandals or shiny ballet flats.

You don’t need to just stick to dark colours when it comes to ruffles, they look great in bright shades too. Just look at how good Elle and her mummy look as they wear matching yellow ruffled dresses, with yellow sunnies and summery sandals.

Ruffles work with prints too, though we won’t recommend working with prints that are too loud; stick to simple patterns. Shannon shows you how to work checkered prints with ruffles, with ruching on the neckline, waist and arms.

Ruffles aren’t just for hemlines, they work well on necklines. A simple denim dress is made more interesting looking with ruffles at the neckline.

Ruffles work great on separates too. You can get a crop top with ruffled sleeves and go really fancy on the bottom with ruffled edged shorts. With a pair of sunnies, you have an on-trend summer ready look.

Ruffles aren’t just for lining straight edges – they work as an asymmetrical accent, and can even cut across the bodice.

If you are not too sure how to go about pairing a ruffle-filled top, stick to slim silhouettes for the bottom, like a straight cut denim skirt – you won’t go too wrong.

Straight cut solid coloured pants work well too, even with a more interesting take on ruffles, with a cold shoulder.

However, out of all the ways to wear ruffles, our favourite way to wear it is to go simple with a one-piece, making it interesting with a splash of colour and two tiers of ruffles.
