Living in Singapore, we have the luxury of trying out new restaurants on a regular basis — there’s always some fresh new concept to visit.
But sometimes, it’s worth revisiting an old favourite, especially when they offer something interesting.
One such example is Gordon Grill, a stalwart in the local fine-dining scene that has been known for serving premium steaks and Continental cuisine since 1963. In 2013, as part of Gordon Grill’s 50th anniversary, the restaurant its Weekend Roast Lunch and the unique meat wagon — a throwback to the 60s when the restaurant had a regular ‘Wagon of the Day’.
To keep things fresh, in January this year, the Weekend Roast Lunch menu (S$55 for three-courses, S$65 for four) was refreshed to include new dishes the likes of Lightly grilled salmon with herbed corn and lemon butter sauce and the Grilled lamb chop with cassoulet toulousain and green pepper sauce. The rest of the menu is based around traditional flavours that are well-loved. For appetisers, for example, there are choices such as Lobster bisque scented with Napoleon brandy and Chilled seaweed pasta with smoked duck breast and caviar and for desserts, the restaurant offers a good ol’ sherry trifle which always goes down a treat.
But really, the star is the meat wagon which features a traditional slow roasted U.S. prime beef rib eye on wagon, served with Yorkshire pudding, mashed potatoes, market vegetables and natural gravy — carved and served by the table-side. Not only is this a throwback to the golden days of personalised service, but if dining with your children in tow, this is a real treat for their little eyes and could teach them a thing or two about what fine dining service is all about.
One thing to note however, is that the restaurant does not have a kids’ menu but there are ample options — such as soups — on the a la carte menu that younger children will enjoy, not to mention plenty of freshly-baked bread on offer. On a recent visit there, I was pleased to find that the restaurant has high chairs on offer (which isn’t always a given when it’s a fine-dining establishment), and that the staff are nice and accommodating to young diners.
While Gordon Grill is more of a date night option come evening time, the weekend roast lunch is a great place for a slightly more formal family lunch on Saturdays and Sundays. Not only are younglings very welcome (I spotted at least three tables with toddlers), the menu offers high-quality food at a good price, and in a beautiful environment.
If you’re looking for a nice place to visit with the family on the weekend, this is a pretty good option to add to the list.
