Stays: Cassia Bintan

Sometimes all we need is a quick getaway to disconnect from the everyday demands of life and reconnect with the people that mean so much to us. But with little kiddos in tow, flying off to an exotic destination is not all that dreamy in reality. Enter Bintan, just 45 minutes away via ferry from Singapore, it is just a hop and skip away from our sunny shores.

You will be spoilt for choice with the many resorts Bintan has to offer, like the baby of the Laguna Integrated Resorts – Cassia Bintan – our pick for the weekend.

Unlike a typical hotel, Cassia Bintan is more like a service apartment with hotel ammenities. Its biggest draw? The beautifully well-kept beach and turtle conservatory. You can easily spend your days doing nothing but checking in on the young hatchlings, learning about the conservation efforts of the turtles and exploring the beach. Our little explorers love looking under the rocks and tide pools for marine life and the lovely beach makes the perfect backdrop for learning through play, and family bonding.

We stay in a two-bedroom fully-fitted loft. The rooms are well-designed and very comfortable. The well-appointed master bedroom boasts a double bed with en-suite; while the cosy second room features a luxurious single bed. There is an extra napping (or playing) nook, which is a lovely addition, for when Mummy needs to nap, or when it is time out for active little ones.

The room also features a fully equipped kitchenette with a hob, microwave oven, cooking and eating utensils, so eating-in is an option, especially with the in-house ‘market place’.

Now you can grab a quick meal at the Vista, and we recommend the Nasi Goreng Kampung (IDR 170,000 or S$15.80) which is an all-around pleaser with the family. But if you prefer to stay-in to dine, grab the mookata set from the market and have a slow dinner with the family in your room. There is also The Xana Beach Club’s spectacular dinner buffet on Fridays and Saturdays if you are feeling especially ravenous. Tip: Their pizzas for lazy afternoons by the beach are a must-try.

As one of the hotels of the Laguna Integrated Resorts, guests at the Cassia Bintan share use of the facilities at The Angsana and The Banyan Tree too, which offers more choices for restaurants and activities. While Cassia Bintan has no in-house spa, you can easily hop over to the Angsana Spa for some pampering. Try one of their signature treatments (from IDR 1,500,000 or $140) to melt away the stresses of city life.

Kids can look forward to Cassia’s Foam Party every Saturday (or if it rains, you can head over to The Angsana’s kids room for indoor play). Or join in the many scheduled activities at the Cassia Bintan – there are nature walks, conservatory talks and you can even take a boat out for a morning of fishing.

Families who love the great outdoors may prefer water sporting activities such as kayaking (IDR 183,000 or about S$17 for an hour). Older kids can enjoy jet ski (IDR 738,000 or  approximately S$68.50 for 30mins) or wakeboarding (IDR 281,000 or $26 for 15mins).

The Cassia Bintan is the perfect, quick getaway for our family of four. Lazy days by the beach, amazing food, friendly and attentive service – what better way to recharge and reconnect? It is definitely a place we will soon be returning too.
