It was a busy Saturday afternoon over at Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) Sessions Cooking Studio located at Hard Rock Hotel where more than 20 little budding chefs, with the help of their mothers, learnt how to make three adorable and delicious looking dishes.

Under the expert guidance of RWS’ Executive Pastry Chef Kenny Kong, who was recently named Pastry Chef of the Year at the World Gourmet Summit 2017, and RWS’ Executive Chef Eric Tan, as well as the help of the RWS team, the kids had the opportunity to decorate their own donuts, make an animal bento and construct a caterpillar sandwich over the three-hour session.

Before the actual lessons started, guests got the opportunity to personalise their very own aprons. Once they were done, they were ushered to join the many food-related activity sessions that had been prepared for them.

The children had fun decorating cupcakes, and making chocolate-covered marshmallows, kueh pie tee and even takoyaki. Even before the actual cooking began, we spotted wide smiles on the faces of all the children, especially those who had gotten permission from their mummies to dig into the treats they had created.

It was soon time for the actual cooking to begin. First up: the animal doughnuts. Chef Kenny led the kids with clear and concise instructions on how to mix and knead the ingredients together to make their dough. Participants then used cutters to form their doughnuts, and were taught how to make their doughnuts more fanciful with coloured icing, chocolate balls and rainbow rice.

Next the kids got to try their hands at making an animal bento set. They first formed the piggy’s head with pink rice, and used cheese and seaweed for the eyes, nose and ears. They then made inari sushi, and used a flower made out of egg omelette as well as some sausage to fill up the rest of the box.

Last but not the least was the caterpillar sandwich. Participants used cutters to cut out precise bread and mango circles in order to form sandwich stacks that made up the caterpillar. They then followed instructions from Chef Eric to make the caterpillar’s head out of a tomato, completing their delicious creation.

Despite the flurry of activity, the mini chefs were all in good spirits and enjoyed putting their own touches to their culinary creations. The mummies expressed that they were pleasantly surprised that their little ones were very attentive and followed the instructions to make the best possible dishes that they could.

Mummy Andrea Braeckevelet said: “The session was very good, the staff were very helpful, the instructions were very clear and we (my daughter Michela and I) really enjoyed ourselves today.”

High fives all round for a job well done.

Mummy Stephanie Robertson agreed that the session by the RWS team was great: “Jamie [my son] really, really enjoyed himself and had lots of fun, especially while making the sweets and getting to eat them at the same time. It was a very fruitful session as I learnt how to make a few new things with him.”
