Dinner Date Friday: Lewin Terrace

Lewin Terrace is one of those really pretty places that every woman loves. Set in a unique colonial building on the heritage site of Fort Canning, the restaurant just screams date night.

I had visited the restaurant a couple of times for dinner events but my latest visit to Lewin was the first time I tried a full tasting menu in the presence of the restaurant’s inimitable Executive Chef Keisuke Matsumoto.img_2867_edited-hassun-2nd

The restaurant is known for its Japanese-French fusion cuisine featuring techniques from both cultures while adopting a produce-driven approach. Its latest menu is the Sho-Mi menu, a seasonal menu available during the Autumn season.

As is to be expected from Fall-inspired dishes, the appetisers, such as the Smoked Tofu served with Spanish Red Urchin and 10-year-old miso, and Mushroom Soup served with Coffee Foam and Prosciutto Blancmange were filled with delicious earthiness — a great way to start the meal.

Other stand out dishes include the Hokkaido Crab with Japanese Apple, Sea Urchin and Yuzu (above), a truly impressive Amadai (right) served with Black Truffle, Koshihikari and Seaweed and the show-stopping Japanese Wagyu Steak Nippon-Rossini-Style (Chef Matsumoto’s interpretation of a French classic).

The food at Lewin is reliably good but it is the ambience that sets the scene for a romantic night out. Housed in a gorgeous black and white bungalow (fun fact: it was the former residence of the Chief who headed the Central Fire Station on Hill Street), complete with atmospheric mood lighting, the space is decidedly gorgeous. On a cool evening, choose to sit outside for a picturesque al fresco experience, although it can get a tad warm at times.

All in, I highly recommend Lewin Terrace for a date night out. Good food and a lovely setting, simply throw in a bottle of wine and some great conversation and daddy and mummy will have a wonderful (and I bet much-needed) evening without the kids.

Lewin Terrace’s Autumn Sho-Mi menu is available for lunch (12pm to 3pm) and dinner (6.30pm to 11pm) and is priced at $118++. The more luxurious Wakon Yosai menu is priced at $188++ and is only available for dinner.
