Celebrity Mums Who Adopted Before Having Their Own Children

Actress Katherine Heigl (best known for playing Doctor Izzie Stevens on Grey’s Anatomy) has been dominating the headlines having announced that she and husband Josh Kelley are expecting a baby boy. Heigl, who is already a mother to two adopted two daughters — Nancy from South Korea (the birthplace of her adoptive sister Meg) and Adalaide — was pleasantly surprised by her pregnancy. “We were considering adoption again, fostering, or pregnancy if possible. Seeing as I have never been pregnant and as my OB/GYN reminded me last year, I’m of advanced maternal age, I wasn’t sure pregnancy was even in the cards for us. Turns out it was very much in the cards,” Heigl revealed in a post on her personal blog.

Here at Mummyfique, we’re super excited for her and think that this is great news. She follows in the footsteps of other other inspirational celebrity mums such as Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman who adopted before having their own children. In this story, we take a look at some of our favourites:

In 2009, she and husband Josh Kelley adopted Nancy Leigh Mi-Eun Kelley from South Korea, and Adalaide Marie Hope in 2012. Heigl’s own sister Meg was adopted from South Korea which inspired her to do the same. Currently pregnant with a baby boy, we can’t wait for his arrival and to see more pictures of her adorable family.

Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman adopted children Isabella Jane in 1992, and Connor Anthony in 1995 when she was married to ex-husband Tom Cruise. After marrying singer Keith Urban, she gave birth to their daughter daughter Sunday Rose in 2008 with her youngest daughter Faith Margaret (born via a surrogate) joining the family in 2010.

Angelina Jolie

The epitome of a multi-racial, multi-cultural family, Angelia Jolie adopted son Maddox from Cambodia, Zara from Ethiopia, and Pax from Vietnam, before biologically giving birth to daughter Shiloh and twins Knox and Vivienne with husband Brad Pitt. In an interview with BBC Radio R’s Women’s Hour, the actress revealed that her children are learning seven different languages between them! Shiloh is learning a Cambodian language called Khmai, Pax chose Vietnamese, Zara can speak French, Vivienne wanted to learn Arabic and Knox is learning sign language and finally Maddox, Jolie’s eldest son has gone for both German and Russian. With so many languages, we wonder what their family meals are like!

Michelle Pfeiffer

The very private Michelle Pfeiffer adopted Claudia Rose in 1993, and gave birth to biological son John Henry with husband David Kelley in 1994. Pfeiffer reportedly once taught a reporter lesson  by correcting the reporter’s use of the term “adopted daughter” because in her opinion there was no difference between her children — adopted or otherwise. And you know what, we couldn’t agree more.
